A crumbling or leaning chimney stack is a serious structural and weathering risk. We rebuild chimney stacks from the flaunching up or from the base where necessary, using the correct lime or sand-cement mixes suited to the property age. We cover Mildenhall and the surrounding West Suffolk area.

Chimney stacks take more weathering than almost any other part of a building. They sit exposed above the roofline, face freeze-thaw cycles every winter, and on older properties were often built with soft lime mortars that need periodic maintenance. When the brickwork starts to deteriorate — spalled bricks, crumbling mortar joints, or a stack that has visibly shifted — a rebuild is the proper solution. We carry out chimney rebuilds across Mildenhall, from single pot relays on Victorian terraces to full stack rebuilds from below the roofline on larger detached properties.
A chimney rebuild starts with stripping the stack back to sound brickwork, which might mean removing just the top metre or the entire stack down to where it exits the roof covering. We then rebuild in matching brick where possible, using a mortar mix appropriate to the age of the property — hard cement mortars on older soft brick cause further damage, so we use lime-based mixes on pre-1920s buildings. Pots are re-set or replaced, the flaunching is laid to shed water away from the pots, and all lead flashings are replaced at the same time. There is no point rebuilding the stack and leaving tired old flashings in place.
Chimney work requires proper scaffold — not a ladder and a prayer. We set up a scaffold platform around the stack to work safely and to protect the roof covering below. Any brickwork or debris dropped without protection can crack tiles or slates and create a second problem. Working from a proper platform also means the finished job is done accurately rather than at arm's length from a ladder.
We'll photograph the stack before and during the rebuild so you can see exactly what was done and why. Most chimney rebuilds in Mildenhall take two to four days including scaffold erection. All pointing and brickwork is guaranteed for ten years.
A full chimney stack rebuild in Mildenhall, including scaffold, new brickwork, pots, flaunching, and lead flashings, typically costs between £1,500 and £4,000 depending on the height and size of the stack.
